The Lyceum Theatre is one of London’s largest West End playhouses, located on Wellington Street just off the Strand. It has been the home of Disney’s The Lion King since 1999, and this 2,100-seat venue pairs a striking 1834 neoclassical portico with an early Edwardian auditorium.

Good to Know About Lyceum Theatre

Expect arrival queues: Doors, bars, and the cloakroom open around 90 minutes before curtain, so it’s worth arriving early to clear the bag security screening and ticket scanning at the main doors.

Puppets in the aisles: If you are sitting in the Stalls, ensure you are in your seat well before the curtain rises, as full-sized animal puppets process directly down the seating aisles during the breathtaking opening number.

Fully cashless operations: All concession bars, souvenir hubs, and at-seat ordering systems inside the venue operate strictly on a card-only basis.

Cloakroom takes bags, not coats: The onsite cloakroom accepts suitcases, rucksacks, and pushchairs for a small fee, but it cannot take coats or jackets.

Limited lift accessibility: A public lift is available to transport patrons with mobility needs to designated rows in both the Royal Circle and the Grand Circle levels.

Step-free stalls entry: Step-free street access is provided directly into the main foyer and the Stalls level, where the theatre’s specialized wheelchair spaces are housed.

Concert-style sensory elements: Because the show features a high-impact staging design, audience members should prepare for sudden strobe lighting, theatrical smoke, heavy fog, and occasional loud sounds.

Strict external food policy: Outside alcohol and hot food are completely banned from the auditorium, though cold snacks and water in plastic bottles are permitted.

About Lyceum Theatre

While a theatre has existed on or near this site since 1765, the present building's iconic neoclassical facade and grand Corinthian pillars were designed by architect Samuel Beazley and opened in 1834. During the late 19th century, the venue achieved legendary status under the management of famed actor-manager Sir Henry Irving and actress Ellen Terry, with Dracula author Bram Stoker famously serving as the theatre's business manager for over twenty years.

In 1904, the building was extensively rebuilt behind its historic facade, with architect Bertie Crewe installing the lavish, opulent Rococo interior that remains today. After surviving a post-war period where it was converted into a massive ballroom and rock concert venue hosting legends like The Clash and Bob Marley, the Lyceum was restored to its former glory in 1996.
