Cabaret is Kander and Ebb's musical, with a book by Joe Masteroff, following American writer Clifford Bradshaw and his relationship with English cabaret singer Sally Bowles inside a nightclub in Weimar-era Berlin, presided over by the club's Emcee, as the Nazi regime begins its rise to power. For this production, the historic Playhouse Theatre auditorium was reconfigured into an in-the-round club space, renamed the Kit Kat Club, with previews beginning on 15 November 2021.

The London revival is directed by Rebecca Frecknall, choreographed by Julia Cheng and designed by Tom Scutt, with Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley originating the roles of the Emcee and Sally Bowles.

Interesting Facts About Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club

The production won a record seven Olivier Awards in 2022, including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor in a Musical for Eddie Redmayne and Best Actress in a Musical for Jessie Buckley.

To create the club, the Playhouse Theatre's traditional proscenium-arch auditorium was completely rebuilt into an in-the-round space seating around 550.

The Playhouse Theatre first opened on 11 March 1882 as the Royal Avenue Theatre, seating around 1,200.

A fatal accident in 1905, when part of the roof of the adjoining Charing Cross railway station collapsed during works and killed six people, led to the theatre's rebuild and its reopening as The Playhouse in 1907.

Between 1951 and 1976, the theatre served as a BBC recording studio, hosting sessions by acts including Queen, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles; a Pink Floyd concert was broadcast from the venue on 3 April 1967.

The production transferred to Broadway's August Wilson Theatre in April 2024, receiving nine Tony Award nominations and winning Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Tom Scutt.

The Playhouse Theatre is a Historic England listed building, first listed on 9 January 1970.
