About High School Musical

Disney's High School Musical started as a 2006 Disney Channel film, and the London stage version tells the same story. Troy Bolton captains the basketball team at East High. Gabriella Montez is the new girl, and she's better at science than most of her class. Both of them secretly love to sing, so when they sign up for the school musical, everyone around them panics. The basketball team and the drama club each have their own reasons to keep the pair off the stage, and the scheming starts.

Harry Judd, the McFly drummer, plays Coach Bolton. KayCee Stroh was Martha Cox in the films and is now the drama teacher, Ms Darbus. Tobias Turley and Leonor Correia play Troy and Gabriella, and Caitlin Tipping and Luke Bayer are the siblings Sharpay and Ryan. Joseph Houston and William Whelton co-direct, with choreography by Aaron Renfree. Some seats are on the stage itself, so part of the audience sits inside the set. The songs are the ones fans know, including Breaking Free and We're All In This Together.

Interesting Facts about High School Musical

The stage musical had its world premiere at Stagedoor Manor Summer Theatre Camp in 2006, followed by its first professional staging at The Theatre of Stars in Atlanta, Georgia.
A US national tour followed in 2007, and the show reached London's Hammersmith Apollo in January 2008.
The stage book is by David Simpatico, with music adapted, arranged and produced by Bryan Louiselle.
This production is the first non-replica staging of the show in the UK, meaning it is not the original Disney stage version.
It premiered at The Lowry in Salford in August 2026 and extended its run there because of demand before transferring to Wembley Park.
At the Salford premiere, the orchestra pit and first three rows of stalls were replaced by a thrust stage forming the basketball court, with a central runway running into the audience.
Because the staging is non-replica, the creative team designed its own Wildcats logo and its own costumes, leaning into early 2000s fashion.
