Matilda The Musical had its world premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on 9 December 2010, before transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in the West End on 24 November 2011.
The production swept the 2012 Laurence Olivier Awards with 7 wins, including Best New Musical, a record for a single production at the time.
On Broadway, Matilda won 5 Tony Awards in 2013, including Best Book of a Musical for Dennis Kelly.
The Broadway production ran at the Shubert Theatre from 11 April 2013 until 1 January 2017, closing after 1,555 performances.
Matilda became the Cambridge Theatre's longest-running production as of April 2017, surpassing earlier long runs at the venue such as Chicago (590 performances) and Half a Sixpence (678 performances).
A Netflix film adaptation, Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, was released in the UK in November 2022 and worldwide the following month.
Beyond the West End and Broadway, productions have opened in Australia, on UK tour, and in countries including Canada, the Philippines, South Korea and Spain.
As of a September 2025 booking extension through January 2027, the West End production was described as the 10th longest-running musical in West End history.
