Inspired by Roald Dahl's 1988 novel, Matilda The Musical follows Matilda Wormwood, an extraordinarily gifted young girl with telekinetic powers, who stands up to her neglectful parents and the tyrannical headmistress of Crunchem Hall, Miss Trunchbull, with the support of her teacher, Miss Honey. The show is produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, with book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

Directed by Matthew Warchus, the production had its world premiere at the RSC's Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on 9 December 2010, before transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in the West End on 24 November 2011.
