About Wicked

Elphaba on stage in Wicked

Years before Dorothy lands in Oz, two students meet as roommates at Shiz University and cannot stand each other. Elphaba is clever, difficult and green; Galinda is popular and intends to stay that way. What divides them in the end is not the rivalry but the Wizard.

  • One ends up called Glinda the Good, the other the Wicked Witch of the West. The show is about which of those names was earned.

Interesting Facts About Wicked

Gregory Maguire built the name Elphaba out of L. Frank Baum's initials, said aloud: L-F-B.

Wicked has been resident at the Apollo Victoria since September 2006.

The London production gets through around 250 pounds of dry ice a performance to make the fog.

Figures published for the production run to roughly 450 costumes, 240 pairs of handmade shoes and 90 wigs, though the counts quoted for Broadway and London differ.

The green makeup takes half an hour to apply before every performance.

Stephen Schwartz hid the first seven notes of "Over the Rainbow" inside the "Unlimited" theme, as a nod to the 1939 film.

Glinda's bubble dress has 45 petals and close to 100,000 sequins, and takes its shape from Dior's 1949 "Junon" gown.
