Based on Gaston Leroux's novel, The Phantom of the Opera follows a disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House and becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine Daae, whom he grooms for stardom while she is drawn to her childhood love, Raoul. Set against a backdrop of 19th-century operatic spectacle, the score includes 'The Music of the Night', 'All I Ask of You' and the title song.

Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the production opened at this theatre, then known as Her Majesty's Theatre, on 9 October 1986.
